About the Artist

Marieke Luthart (she/her) is an illustrator and visual artist. Purity is a central element in her work and therefore she uses analogue techniques. Think of linocuts with clean lines in black and white, paintings with bright colours and a flat visual language. She likes to work for small businesses that are conscious of our planet and all living creatures.

For Katoenclub she represent “Firestarter”. A series of linocuts telling the story of the origin of the fire, based on a Peruvian myth.

A man named Takkea is the first to discover how to make fire by rubbing two sticks together. Takkea was not alone in wanting to possess this magical warmth. Birds attacked him to get the fire, but Takkea held out. Yet he did not remain the sole owner. At night a hummingbird flew through the fire. This little creature caught fire and fluttered around the world. This is how the fire spread worldwide and today everyone can enjoy the energy and warmth of this special fire.
