About the Artist
I’m Simon Ruis (2002), an illustrator based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. I’d describe myself as a bit of a perfectionist, but with a loose and playful drawing style. I’m particularly drawn to illustrating for newspapers, music events, and book covers. But I also often create work without knowing where it will end up.
I find inspiration in all kinds of places: a strange bird, a bizarre situation, or a deeply rooted personal desire. It often starts with a spontaneous little drawing, which I then transform into animations, posters, screen prints, linocuts, risograph prints, and publications.
About the Takeover
Het Huis van Betekenis is a vibrant illustration hub and creative sanctuary from Utrecht where established names and fresh, upcoming artists connect. This autumn and winter, they are joining forces with Katoenclub for an exclusive seasonal takeover.
Guided by the theme ‘Free Your Bird’, sixteen creators embraced pure analogue craftsmanship using pens, markers, and pencils. Challenged to channel their inner bird, they created a refreshing tribute to artistic freedom, authenticity, and self-expression. These shirts invite you to break away from conventions, embrace who you are, and spread your own wings.
